The Gymber Research Team looked at health and fitness trends across 8 countries we plan to expand into, surveying approximately 1,000 Europeans. We learned the situation is not great, but it should be easy to fix with our Gymber Club app.

Outside-in research and agile development are at the core of Gymber development. In October 2022, our Research team setup a comprehensive survey to learn more about health and fitness trends across 8 countries we plan to expand into, 8 languages we had to translate, and approximately 1,000 Europeans we surveyed.

Gymber team is 100% remote, 200% flexible, and spans across 10 different countries on 3 continents, which helps us better understand the local culture and, translate using our local resources for free without robots.

Participants identified themselves as fitness beginners (43%), fitness enthusiasts (18%), personal trainers (14%), doctors and health nutritionists (8%), a considerable amount of the nutrition-conscious population (V, VG, GF), and one participant identifying as 🍫 chocolate.

Who do you like to exercise with?

Half of 🇳🇴 Norwegian men only exercise with other men, whereas in 🇵🇱 Poland, one-third of women prefer to exercise with men.

Overall, women prefer other women (64% vs 34% anyone) and smaller groups (52%). Men are twice as likely to exercise with anyone (62%) and prefer larger groups (47%) of men (50%). We also confirmed 18-44-year-olds highly prefer exercising with people of their age. Gymber Club will feature more detailed privacy settings so people can decide whether to meet their neighbours or only close friends. Using the app will not require users to specify their sex and age, nor do we think it’s our or anyone’s business. However, the user will need to verify to communicate with others.

What is concerning to us is the high number of young adults choosing not to exercise at all due to not having anyone to work out with (20-30%). Whether or not it’s caused by the pandemic, social media, or other environmental factors, we believe we need to focus on the 18-34 demographic and younger generations.

Creating healthy habits very early in life improves long-term physical and mental health. Gymber Club will make sports, exercise, and healing much more accessible and promote long-lasting friendships.

What do you like to do?

⚽ Team sports (22%) were the most popular activity, especially in 🇫🇷 France (17%) and among 25-34 (35%) and other young demographics. Men are 2x more likely to play team sports. Women in 🇬🇷 Greece (30%) and the 🇬🇧 UK (24%) play the most sports.

🏋️ Fitness and 🫀 cardio share the second place with 20%, respectively. Cardio exercise is directly correlated with team sports in previously mentioned countries and demographics but is performed equally by all sexes. Fitness exercise is consistently popular across 🇪🇺 Europe (11-17%), except Austria.

☀️ Summer sports are, as expected, very popular in France (21%), Italy (19%), Spain (19%), but also Norway (17%)! 🇵🇱 Poles (5%), 🇬🇷 Greeks (7%), and the 🇬🇧 British (7%) don’t seem to have a passion for heat.

☃️ No surprise, 🇳🇴 Norway loves winter sports (24%) and 🇬🇷 Greece the least (5%).

What exercises have you done in the last 10 months?

We intentionally left in some unusual ones for your amusement. These users use Nike, Strava, Gympass, Sweatcoin, Fitbit, and other apps to train their running. But no app does them all.

Biggest barriers

35% Lack of time
15% Lack of motivation
14% No one to exercise with
13% Gym costs
10% Fear of injury
9% Low self-confidence

GymberClub tackles all these problems by saving you time and being more proactive and accessible. It’s a social network for exercise and friends. You can find help for free instead of hurting yourself by trying to learn by yourself.

How often do you exercise?

In our survey, most people exercise 1-2x/week (29%), 3-5x/week (27%), and there are a lot of true enthusiasts that hit the gym and sport 6-7x/week (12%). The problem lies in the 11% that move only once a month or, even more shockingly, 16% only do one activity during the entire year.

In 🇵🇱 Poland (16%), 🇬🇧 the UK (15%), and 🇳🇴 Norway (14%) people exercise 6-7 times per week.

In 🇵🇱 Poland and 🇪🇸 Spain, about 20% of people exercise only once a year!

These significant differences show how each country is different, and there is no single solution for all. Poland has both the highest and lowest amount of people who exercise almost every day and once a year, respectively.

What motivates you?

Young people are highly motivated by gaining rewards, as proven by Sweetcoin and our survey.

In our next research, we’d like to look at even more countries, investigate cultural and demographic differences, and further investigate concerning numbers and reasons why our younger generations are much less active and less happy than older generations. Anxiety and depression constitute more than 40% of mental-health disorders among young people (those aged 10–19).
